High-rise & high density debate for Dublin-Doolan

Published: 1 March, 2008

Sinn Féin's Dublin Spokesperson on the Environment & Local Government, Councillor Daithí Doolan, speaking during the Social & Community Affairs debate at the Sinn Fein Ard Fheis, claimed, "the time was right for a full debate on high rise in Dublin."

Cllr. Doolan explains:

"Urban sprawl has become a blight on the eastern coast of Ireland and must be tackled as a matter of priority. It is no longer satisfactory to simply expect people to move out of Dublin and spend hours commuting to and from work, leading to daily traffic chaos. This clearly contributes to climate change and global warming but also contributes to undermining people's quality of life. Dublin must provide homes for those who wish to stay in Dublin and stop forcing families out into surrounding counties."

Cllr. Doolan outlined:

"We must approach the challenge of urban sprawl with imagination and honesty. An open, democratic debate must take place where the options of high density and high rise are explored. But central to this debate are the communities themselves. Developments can no longer be about driving up profits and satisfying developers greed. The public's voice must be heard loud and clear and not be drowned out by the Sean Dunne's & Liam Carroll's of this world. To ensure a full debate we will be holding a conference on April 22nd."

In conclusion Cllr. Doolan demanded that:

"Any future residential developments in Dublin must be based on meeting the housing needs of the city and building communities that are environmentally & socially sustainability"
