Sinn Fein lays down the challenge on Climate Change-Doolan
Published: 29 February, 2008
Sinn Féin's Dublin Spokesperson on the Environment, Cllr. Daithí Doolan, speaking during the debate on the Environment at this weekend's party Ard Fheis claimed that, "climate change represents the single greatest global threat to our world."
Cllr. Doolan claimed that, " Ireland is not immune to this threat and effective action must be taken if we are to avoid disastrous consequences in the near future. Here in Dublin, Sinn Fein is spearheading a radical, local approach which identifies key areas of action that will positively impact on climate change. If we are successful Dublin will be the first city on this Island which will have adopted a strategy to combat Climate Change."
"We have proposed a 5 year strategy linked directly to the Kyoto Agreement, which will focus on:
Waste Management. The promotion of reduction, reusing and recycling as alternatives to land fill & incineration. Adoption of a Zero Waste Policy for Dublin and the scrapping of any plans for an incinerator in Dublin.
Transport. The promotion of public transport over private cars. Renewable energy sources for Dublin City Council vehicles
Planning. To ensure that all developments are environmentally & socially sustainable. Develop guidelines for lands at risk of flooding. Integrated actions on spatial planning to reduce commuting.
Energy. To increase use of renewable energy sources in heating existing buildings and new developments. Renewable energy sources to become standard in renovation programmes for Dublin City Council
Policy proofing. To ensure all policy developed by Dublin City Council is Environmentally Proofed and is in line with the Kyoto Agreement."
Cllr. Doolan continued, "it is important to think globally and act locally. Sinn Féin is confident that if this strategy is implemented with public consultation, Dublin can lead by example in implementing the Kyoto Agreement. For our part Sinn Fein is committed to giving this strategy its full support and encouragement. We must and will work with others to ensure its success. We have already held a successful open day and look forward to holding an international conference on Climate Change in the near future before Dublin City Council adopt the proposed strategy."
Cllr. Doolan concluded by calling on all, "Sinn Fein councillors the length and breath of the country to take the strategy and have it implemented in your own areas. We are the only all Ireland party and are in the unique position to have this strategy implemented on an all Ireland basis. A united Ireland is useless if we destroy the earth before hand."
